Johnny Haynes was an English footballer who played most of his career for Fulham. In 1950, Haynes signed a contract with Fulham at the age of 15 and made his debut in the first team two years later. Haynes made his debut for England in 1954, scoring a goal in a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland. He played 56 caps for England, including 22 as captain. Haynes was nicknamed "the Maestro" for his offensive play, two-footed passing ability, vision and agility. Johnny Haynes is regarded as Fulham's greatest ever player. After the abolition of the £20 maximum wage in 1961, he became the first player to receive £100 a week. In the 1959–60 season, Fulham FC finished 10th in the First Division, which was their highest league position until Fulham finished 9th in the 2003–04 Premier League season.
