During the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, the Dutch national team reached the final, just like 4 years before. The final was lost 3-1 against the home country. In the group with Peru, Scotland and Iran, the Netherlands managed to leave Scotland behind with a better goal difference. In the second round, the Netherlands started furiously and swept Austria 5-1 off the field. After a draw against West Germany and a victory over Italy, the final was reached. After 90 minutes it was equal, (1-1). In the extension, the Argentinians appeared to have the longest breath and it eventually became 3-1.
