The back of the Corinthians retro football shirt features a special print of 'Democracia Corinthiana'. The Democracy of Corinthians was an ideological movement in the 1980s at football club SC Corinthians Paulista and is seen as one of the most important actions against the military dictatorship that ruled Brazil at the time. The movement was led by midfielders Socrates, defender Wladimir, striker Casagrande and midfielder Zenon and with the permission of chairman Waldemar Pires.
After a disappointing season in 1981, chairman Vicente Matheus stepped down and Waldemar Pires became the new chairman. There was a system of self-government in which decisions were made jointly, all votes were equal. The players often printed political messages such as Eu quero votar para presidente (I want to choose the president) on their jerseys. The motto of the movement was Ganhar ou perder, mas sempre com democracia (win or lose, but always with democracy). The revolution brought sporting successes and in 1982 and 1983 the club won the Campeonato Paulista and reached the semi-finals twice in the Série A.
