During the 1982 World Cup, the Northern Irish were in a group with Spain, Yugoslavia and Honduras. Northern Ireland drew the first 0-0 against the Yugoslavs. In the second game it was 1-1 against Honduras. The last group match was surprisingly won 1-0 and Northern Ireland advanced to the Second Round as group head. Northern Ireland has the youngest player to ever play at a World Cup: 17-year-old Norman Whiteside. In the second round, Northern Ireland was eliminated in a group with France, 4-1 loss and Austria (2-2).
