The 1950 FIFA World Cup was the fourth edition and the host nation was Brazil. The tournament lasted three weeks, from June 24 to July 16. A total of 15 countries took part in the tournament and it was played in six different stadiums. Uruguay won the World Cup in Brazil by beating Brazil 2-1 in the lion's den in the 'final'. Uruguay finished in the final group by winning over Brazil, Sweden and Spain. During the 'final' Brazil had enough of a draw, Uruguay had to win to become world champions. With 25 minutes to play, Brazil was leading 0-1 and there seemed to be nothing in the air. In minute 66, Uruguay equalized and 10 minutes before the end, Alcides Ghiggia scored the decisive goal. The 1-2 defeat in front of their own audience became a national trauma for Brazil. This match was nicknamed Maracanaco, the shock of Maracana.
