Sócrates, whose full name is Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, was a Brazilian professional footballer. He was nicknamed O Doutor (The Doctor) because in addition to being a professional footballer, he was also a doctor. Sócrates was named South American Footballer of the Year in 1983. Sócrates made his debut for the Brazilian national team against Paraguay on May 17, 1979 and played a total of 63 international matches in which he scored 25 goals.
